Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum addressed his torn Achilles tendon injury in an interview with ESPN on Wednesday night (Jan. 28, 2026), revealing he has not yet made a final decision on whether he will return to action this season.

“I want to get it right the first time, so it’s just a lot to think about,” Tatum said. “I’ve been progressing well in my rehab and I feel stronger every week, but this is a severe injury. I need to think it through carefully.”
Tatum suffered the major injury during the playoffs in May. Last week, he completed a full workout in front of reporters in Detroit and has recently increased his workload, fueling speculation about a possible late-season return.
The Celtics currently hold a 29-18 record, tied with the New York Knicks for the second-best mark in the Eastern Conference — one of the league’s elite teams. Tatum’s potential return (or absence) will have a significant impact on Boston’s postseason outlook.
Earlier Wednesday, NBA TV’s “The Association” reported that Tatum was reevaluating his situation and considering sitting out the entire season. His comments to ESPN, however, indicate the decision remains open.
Tatum is being closely monitored by the Celtics’ medical staff. While he continues to hold hope for a return if he feels fully ready, his top priority is avoiding re-injury or long-term complications.
