Celtics Identified The “Final Move” To Secure Banner 19: An Anfernee Simons-Bulls Trade

The Boston Celtics continue to defy expectations, holding 2nd in the East at 26-16 despite Jayson Tatum’s long-term Achilles absence, trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and losing Luke Kornet + Al Horford in free agency. Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard have led a strong core, keeping Boston firmly in contention.

With this surprise success, the front office is exploring roster upgrades before the Feb. 5 deadline – both to compete for a title now and prepare for Tatum’s return. Center remains the biggest concern, even with solid play from Neemias Queta and Luka Garza.

Nikola Vucevic – Realistic Target From Bulls Multiple reports link the Celtics to Nikola Vucevic (35, expiring contract) from the Chicago Bulls. As Chicago leans toward rebuilding, Vucevic is a prime trade candidate.

Proposed Trade

  • Celtics receive: Nikola Vucevic
  • Bulls receive: Anfernee Simons + Dalen Terry

Why Vucevic Fits Boston This season, Vucevic averages 17.0 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, shooting 50.8% FG and 37.1% 3PT – still a reliable big. He offers:

  • Scoring from mid-range and three (spacing).
  • Strong rebounding (especially offensive glass).
  • Playmaking and playoff experience from the 5 spot.

Vucevic would be a true starting center upgrade – adding offensive punch alongside Brown, White, and Pritchard when Tatum returns.

Simons as Key Trade Chip Anfernee Simons ($27.6M expiring) is Boston’s most valuable movable piece. He’s been a bench spark (scoring, spacing), but trading him for Vucevic would upgrade the frontcourt. Dalen Terry (23, wing depth) is a reasonable filler for Chicago’s youth rebuild.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Vucevic is a veteran stabilizer, immediate fit, expiring deal allows flexibility. Celtics improve frontcourt without losing picks or young core.
  • Cons: At 35, he’s not a long-term solution. Defense is average (Bulls’ weakness this year). If youth is priority, Celtics may prefer Nic Claxton or Yves Missi.

Deadline Approaching As true contenders, Brad Stevens can make a calculated move to push for Banner 19. Vucevic is a realistic, low-cost upgrade – bringing experience and spacing without major sacrifice.
