Chelsea “Slap €40M Price Tag”, Atletico Pull the Plug Last Minute on Renato Veiga Deal!

In a dramatic twist in the summer transfer window, Atletico Madrid have abruptly halted their pursuit of Chelsea’s young defender Renato Veiga, leaving the 21-year-old’s future hanging in the balance. The Portuguese starlet, who joined Chelsea from FC Basel for £12m last summer, was poised to make a permanent move to the Spanish capital after fruitful negotiations. However, Atletico’s last-minute pivot to a more cost-effective signing has thrown a wrench in the works.

Veiga, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Juventus to play in his preferred centre-back role, had reportedly agreed personal terms with Diego Simeone’s side. Chelsea, keen to cash in on the versatile defender, slapped a hefty €40m price tag, including add-ons, on the Portugal international. Negotiations seemed to be on track, especially after last summer’s successful deals between the two clubs, which saw Joao Felix head to Stamford Bridge and Conor Gallagher move to Madrid.

But Atletico have now shifted their focus, opting instead to secure the services of Feyenoord’s towering Slovakian defender Dávid Hancko for a reported €30m plus add-ons. A statement from Atletico confirmed the agreement: “Atlético de Madrid and Feyenoord have reached an agreement over the transfer of Dávid Hancko to our club, pending the completion of the medical examination and the signing of his new contract. The 1.88m tall defender, born in Prievidza in 1997, made his professional debut with MŠK Žilina in 2016, before moving to Fiorentina and later Feyenoord in 2022. Following his standout performances in Rotterdam, he will become an Atlético de Madrid player once formalities are completed.”

The decision to prioritize Hancko, a 27-year-old proven talent, over Veiga appears to be driven by the lower transfer fee, as Chelsea’s valuation proved too steep for Atletico’s liking. Spanish reports suggest that the La Liga giants have put their interest in Veiga on hold, leaving it uncertain whether they will revisit the deal.

For Chelsea, the focus now shifts to resolving Veiga’s future swiftly. The young defender has attracted interest from other European clubs, and the Blues are eager to finalize his departure. Meanwhile, their transfer business continues unabated, with Chelsea reportedly in advanced talks to sign Ajax’s teenage sensation Jorrel Hato. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 18-year-old has requested to leave Ajax, with personal terms already agreed. Chelsea are now negotiating a fee around €40m for the highly-rated Dutch defender, signaling their intent to bolster their backline with young talent.

As the transfer window heats up, Veiga’s next move remains a point of intrigue. Will another club meet Chelsea’s €40m demands, or could Atletico reignite their interest? For now, the young defender waits as the Blues navigate a busy market, determined to shape their squad for the season ahead.
