CHICAGO DROP A BOMBSHELL, Bulls’ Josh Giddey Takes Major Step in Injury Recovery

In a surprising turn of events that’s sending shockwaves through the NBA, the Chicago Bulls have delivered some much-needed positive news amid their turbulent season. Star guard Josh Giddey, sidelined since late December with a hamstring injury, has made a significant stride in his rehabilitation process, hinting at an imminent return that could reignite the team’s playoff hopes.

The Bulls have been navigating choppy waters without Giddey, who was diagnosed with a strained left hamstring on December 30 following an incident during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The injury occurred as Giddey attempted to break a press at the start of the third quarter, forcing him to clutch his leg in pain and exit the contest prematurely. Initially ruled out for a “few weeks,” the Australian sensation was set for a re-evaluation after a two-week period, as reported by ESPN’s Jamal Collier on New Year’s Eve.

Bulls' Josh Giddey Takes Major Step in Injury Recovery

Fast-forward to this week, and the bombshell update comes courtesy of CHGO Sports’ Will Gottlieb: Giddey participated in practice on Monday ahead of the Bulls’ matchup against the Houston Rockets. While his involvement was limited to non-contact drills, this marks a crucial step forward in his recovery timeline. Sources indicate that Giddey may still need clearance for contact before progressing to full scrimmages, such as 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 sessions. This development has Bulls fans buzzing, as it suggests the 23-year-old could be back in action sooner than anticipated, potentially bolstering a squad that’s been plagued by injuries.

Giddey’s determination shone through even in the immediate aftermath of the injury. Speaking to reporters shortly after the incident, he revealed his initial intent to push through the pain. “This is my first ever soft tissue kind of injury, so I didn’t really know. That’s why I didn’t know the severity of what happened. I was thinking about keeping playing, but, you know, soft tissue stuff, as I said, you want to be careful with it. You don’t want this stuff to linger. You want to kind of hit it on the head as soon as it pops up, and that’s what we’ve done,” Giddey told Peter Brown of basketball.com.au.

The Bulls’ medical team wisely erred on the side of caution, pulling him from the game despite his efforts to warm up and return. This approach aligns with the league-wide trend this season, where soft tissue injuries have become increasingly common, prompting teams to prioritize long-term health over short-term gains. On the same night Giddey went down, teammate Coby White also suffered a calf injury in the first half, compounding Chicago’s woes.

Practice updates from Gottlieb also shed light on other key players. Coby White was present at Monday’s session but has been ruled out for the Rockets game as part of ongoing injury management. Meanwhile, forward Julian Phillips was sidelined due to a wrist issue, adding another layer to the Bulls’ injury-riddled roster.

Before this setback, Giddey was enjoying a breakout campaign, posting career-high averages of 19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game. His shooting efficiency—46.6% from the field, 38.6% from beyond the arc, and 76.1% from the free-throw line—had positioned him as a dark horse for All-Star consideration. As noted by the Chicago Sun-Times, Giddey was generating buzz in a relatively thin Eastern Conference guard pool, potentially slotting in behind stars like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, and Tyrese Maxey. His candidacy might hinge on positional classifications, such as whether Boston’s Jaylen Brown is viewed as a guard or forward.

The Bulls, who started the season with promise but have since faltered to a 18-24 record and the 10th spot in the East, desperately need Giddey’s return. They’re just four games out of the top six, making every win critical in their push for a direct playoff berth rather than settling for the Play-In Tournament.

This latest update on Giddey’s recovery isn’t just a step—it’s a leap toward stability for a franchise in flux. As Chicago prepares to face Houston and beyond, all eyes will be on the young guard’s progress. Could this be the spark that turns the Bulls’ season around? Only time will tell, but the bombshell has been dropped, and the NBA world is watching.
