Chelsea are steeling themselves for the real possibility that Enzo Fernandez could depart Stamford Bridge this summer, with the Argentine World Cup winner openly hinting at a dream move to Real Madrid.

Fernandez has repeatedly stopped short of pledging his long-term future to the Blues, and his latest comments—expressing a clear desire to live in Madrid—have only intensified speculation that a switch to the Spanish giants could be on the horizon after the 2026 World Cup.
Reports suggest Chelsea are demanding a hefty £100m+ fee to let their star midfielder leave, but the club is already preparing contingency plans to move forward without the talented playmaker.
Enter Adam Wharton — Chelsea’s number one midfield target.
According to reliable sources, the Crystal Palace and England international has emerged as the Blues’ top priority to replace Fernandez in the engine room.
Simon Phillips reported on his Substack that Chelsea’s recruitment team has admired Wharton for a long time — even before he made the step up to the Premier League with Palace. They view him as the exact profile missing from the current squad: a combative, progressive midfielder capable of dictating play, winning duels, and driving the team forward.

“SPTC Sources have heard that the number one target in midfield for Chelsea this summer right now is Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace,” Phillips wrote. “Wharton has been liked by the current Chelsea recruitment team for some time… and they see him as a profile that needs adding to this squad the most.”
While Wharton won’t come cheap — few top-class midfielders will in today’s market — Chelsea have already made initial contact with his representatives. However, there is no guarantee of success, as competition for the highly-rated England star is expected to be fierce from other Premier League heavyweights.
Other names such as Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba have also been linked with Chelsea, and much could hinge on performances at the upcoming World Cup. Anderson is tipped to feature prominently for England under Thomas Tuchel, while Wharton continues to fight for a regular spot in the Three Lions setup.
Both players could gain valuable experience in a midfield that might also include Cole Palmer, following his encouraging recent cameo for England.
With Enzo Fernandez potentially eyeing the exit door and Real Madrid circling, Chelsea are wasting no time in reshaping their midfield. Bringing in a battle-hardened Premier League performer like Adam Wharton would send a clear message: the rebuild at Cobham is not just underway — it’s turning violent.
The summer window promises to be explosive as the Blues look to replace one midfield maestro with a proven gladiator ready to take control in the heart of the pitch.
