DISASTER IN LONDON! Chelsea let down by VAR as penalty mistake confirmed following controversial incident

The Key Match Incidents Panel has officially confirmed what Chelsea fans already knew: the Blues were robbed of a clear penalty during their Premier League clash against Everton last month.

In a 3-2 majority vote, the panel ruled that Everton captain James Tarkowski should have been penalised for a blatant elbow on Wesley Fofana inside the 18-yard box. Despite the clear infringement, VAR opted not to intervene, allowing the officials to wave play on.

At the time of the incident, Chelsea were already trailing 3-0, meaning even a successfully converted spot-kick would have been unlikely to change the final outcome. Nevertheless, the decision has been branded yet another costly refereeing error in a season plagued by controversy.

This latest blunder brings the total number of Key Match Incidents Panel-identified refereeing mistakes this season to 55 — just 15 short of the entire 2024/25 campaign’s tally.

Chelsea have been at the centre of several contentious decisions this term. The panel previously determined that Reece James should have conceded a penalty for pulling Malick Thiaw’s shirt in their defeat to Newcastle, while dismissing claims that Nick Woltemade fouled Cole Palmer. These calls, along with others, have left many questioning the consistency of officiating and VAR’s role in big games.

The west London club’s frustrations continue both on and off the pitch. Back-to-back defeats in the Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain have extended their losing streak to four matches, piling pressure on head coach Liam Rosenior.

However, a golden opportunity to halt the rot awaits in the FA Cup. Chelsea return from the March international break with a home quarter-final against League One strugglers Port Vale at Stamford Bridge. They are overwhelming favourites to progress to Wembley, joining what is expected to be a strong quartet alongside Arsenal (vs Southampton), Manchester City (vs Liverpool), and West Ham (vs Leeds).

With Premier League priorities also looming — including tricky fixtures against Manchester United, Manchester City, and Brighton — Chelsea must quickly regain momentum. The Brighton match may be postponed should they advance to the FA Cup semi-finals.

That task has been significantly complicated by a mounting injury crisis in defence. Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah have joined academy product Levi Colwill on the sidelines, leaving Rosenior desperately short of options at the back. Colwill has returned to parts of team training but remains some distance from a full comeback.

The lack of defensive depth could prove decisive in the run-in, with fears that continued instability might prompt key players to reassess their futures at the club.

Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez have both fuelled speculation recently. Cucurella has been linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, while he publicly criticised the ownership by stating he would not have sacked former manager Enzo Maresca.

As the season enters its decisive phase, Chelsea must overcome both their injury woes and the growing sense of injustice if they are to salvage a respectable campaign.
