EX-NUGGETS STAR DROPS NUCLEAR TAKE: LeBron vs. Durant Comparison That’ll Divide NBA Fans!

LeBron James is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a record that will likely stand for a very long time. But are the numbers the only thing that matters? Recently, former Denver Nuggets guard Austin Rivers made a shocking and contrarian statement. He argued that while LeBron holds the scoring title, Kevin Durant is a more versatile scorer, or in his words, has a much “bigger offensive bag.” This opinion has sparked a fiery debate in the NBA community.

1. LeBron James: Scoring Through Force and Intellect

Rivers began by analyzing LeBron’s scoring style: “LeBron is No. 1 (in scoring), but his game doesn’t match a prototypical scorer. It’s also not sexy.” Rivers explains that LeBron’s game is built on sheer force, will, dedication, and his supreme basketball IQ. He scores by “dissecting and controlling a game and power.”

In fact, LeBron himself doesn’t see himself as a scorer. “I don’t like being singled out as a scorer,” he once said. “I’ve always prided myself in being a pass-first guy—a guy who can make everybody feel comfortable.” With top-6 rankings in assists and top-25 in rebounds, LeBron’s claim has merit. However, with 42,184 points and counting, it’s hard to shake his designation as an “all-time great scorer.”

2. Kevin Durant: The “Unmatched” Offensive Bag

In contrast, Rivers had high praise for Kevin Durant. He believes Durant can score in a much wider variety of ways than LeBron. “It’s crazy that he’s going to retire the best jump shooter he’s ever been,” Rivers continued. “For instance, LeBron has scored more points than Kevin, but Kevin can score in a much bigger variety of ways than LeBron. You can argue with the wall, but that’s just the truth.”

Rivers even went as far as to state: “LeBron doesn’t have half the offensive bag that Kevin has.” He included Durant on his list of the all-time best scorers, alongside legendary names like Carmelo Anthony, James Harden, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Allen Iverson.

3. A Deeper Dive: The Numbers and the Age

Durant, one of only six active players in the top-25 all-time scoring list, currently sits ahead of Carmelo Anthony, James Harden, and Shaquille O’Neal. With five fewer seasons under his belt than James, he still has a chance to move up a few more spots before his eventual retirement. This speaks volumes about his incredible efficiency and scoring ability.

If LeBron scores by imposing his will on opponents, using his size and speed to drive to the basket or set up teammates, Durant scores with pure skill. With the height of a center and the skillset of a guard, Durant can shoot from anywhere on the court and score over any defender with ease. This is why Rivers argues that Durant’s “offensive bag” is far more extensive.

Austin Rivers’s comments have ignited a never-ending debate between fans of LeBron and Kevin Durant. While the total points are undeniable, the argument about “scoring versatility” is completely valid. LeBron is a scoring “machine,” combining power, intellect, and durability. Kevin Durant, on the other hand, is a scoring “artist,” using sublime skills to create beautiful and unstoppable shots. This debate is not about who is better, but about celebrating two of the greatest and most distinct scoring styles in NBA history.
