From Elite 8 to FedExForum: Warriors Ship 6-Foot-3 Star to Grizzlies in Massive Seven-Team Trade Shake-Up!

On Sunday, the Golden State Warriors made waves in the NBA with two significant trades, including a blockbuster seven-team deal involving two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant. Following that high-profile move, the Warriors executed a separate trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, sending a promising young guard to the FedExForum.

The Grizzlies announced they acquired the draft rights to Tennessee guard Jahmai Mashack, the No. 59 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, from Golden State. As part of the deal, Memphis also received a future conditional second-round pick and the draft rights to wing Justinian Jessup, the No. 51 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. In exchange, the Warriors received the draft rights to guard Will Richard, the No. 56 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Mashack, a 22-year-old California native, earned a spot on the 2024-25 SEC All-Defensive Team and played a key role in leading Tennessee to its second consecutive Elite 8 appearance during his senior season. Starting all 38 games for the Volunteers, he averaged 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 steals in 28.2 minutes per game, while ranking fourth in the SEC in defensive rating.

The trade initially caused confusion among fans after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors had acquired Mashack in the Durant deal, as Golden State had traded for rookies Alex Toohey and Will Richard on draft night. However, it was later clarified that while Toohey will stay with the Warriors, Mashack is headed to Memphis to join a Grizzlies team aiming for their second straight playoff appearance in the 2025-26 season.

Mashack’s offensive skills are still developing, but his tenacious defense could have been a valuable asset for Steve Kerr’s Warriors. Nevertheless, Golden State appears confident in Will Richard’s potential. The Florida product made an impressive summer league debut against the San Antonio Spurs, posting 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. If this performance is a sign of things to come, Richard could be a key contributor to the Warriors’ second unit.

As Mashack prepares to showcase his defensive prowess in Memphis and Richard aims to prove himself in Golden State, both teams are poised to benefit from this trade in their pursuit of success in the upcoming season.
