Golden State GET A BOMBSHELL: Warriors Get Devastating Jonathan Kuminga Injury Update

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee, the team officially announced on Sunday — delivering another crushing blow to a franchise still reeling from Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL tear just days ago.

The injury occurred during Thursday night’s 123-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks when the fifth-year forward rolled his ankle and hyperextended his left knee on a drive to the basket with 4:29 left in the second quarter. Kuminga fought to stay in the game but eventually limped to the locker room for treatment. Initial sideline evaluations were cautiously optimistic, and the Warriors listed him as questionable to return, but a Friday MRI revealed the bone bruise.

“His progress will be monitored and a re-evaluation date will be determined in the coming days,” the team said in a statement. No timetable for return has been established.

The timing could not be worse. Less than a week after Butler’s devastating ACL injury created a massive void in the wing rotation, head coach Steve Kerr turned back to Kuminga — who had endured a frustrating stretch of 16 consecutive DNPs spanning late December and most of January.

Kuminga responded exactly as the Warriors hoped. In his first game back against Toronto, he exploded for 20 points in just 21 minutes off the bench. Against Dallas, he needed only nine minutes to reach double figures before the injury struck.

Steve Kerr could barely hide his disappointment after the game. “It’s a shame,” Kerr said. “He came in and had great energy, attacked the rim, made some shots. I thought JK was really good, and it’s a great sign with Jimmy out. There’s a hole at that spot, so JK is going to factor in here again. Really pleased with the way he stayed ready and prepared, got his opportunity and played really well.”

Veterans Stephen Curry and Draymond Green echoed the praise, commending Kuminga’s professionalism during his month-long benching.

“It’s just a tribute to him staying ready,” Curry told The Athletic. “I know it’s been a while since he played, but the work he was putting in and understanding how things can change from one game to the next… He looked good, looked comfortable. Hopefully he’s not out too long and can pick up where he left off.”

Now the Warriors face fresh uncertainty. With the NBA trade deadline looming on February 5, Kuminga had been a frequent name in rumors. A bone bruise can vary widely in severity — Denver’s Nikola Jokić has missed nearly a month with a similar injury to his left knee suffered on December 29 — and teams may hesitate to acquire a player whose return timeline remains unclear.

For a Golden State team already navigating the loss of Butler, the sudden setback to their athletic young forward feels like another gut punch in what has quickly become a turbulent stretch of the season.
