KD BOMBSHELL: Inside the Warriors’ “Wild” Trade Push That Stunned the League!

The NBA trade market is no stranger to seismic shifts, but few rumors have sent shockwaves through the league quite like the Golden State Warriors’ audacious pursuit of Kevin Durant before the 2025 trade deadline. As the Warriors scrambled to keep their championship window open for Stephen Curry, Durant’s name emerged as a tantalizing possibility for a reunion that could have reshaped the NBA landscape. Speaking at the 2025 Game Plan Sports Business Summit in Los Angeles on September 16, Durant himself peeled back the curtain on the trade talks, revealing a saga that was equal parts thrilling and chaotic.

With the Warriors teetering on the edge of playoff contention in early 2025, the franchise was in a race against time to maximize Curry’s prime. The solution? A blockbuster move to bring back Durant, the two-time NBA Finals MVP who had previously powered Golden State to championships in 2017 and 2018. According to Arizona Republic’s Duane Rankin, Durant confirmed the Warriors’ serious interest, noting that discussions heated up around the February trade deadline.

However, Durant’s agent and longtime business partner, Rich Kleiman, played a pivotal role in halting the reunion. “I heard Golden State was in the mix around the trade deadline, but that’s when Rich came into play,” Durant said. Leveraging relationships built during Durant’s three-year stint in the Bay Area from 2016 to 2019, Kleiman and Durant effectively pumped the brakes on the deal. “We were able to tell them kind of hold off on that,” Durant added, signaling that the Warriors’ dream of recapturing past glory would remain just that—a dream.

The Warriors weren’t the only team stirring the pot. In Phoenix, Durant found himself at the center of trade rumors following the stunning February 2 trade of Luka Doncic. The Phoenix Suns, Durant’s team at the time, were grappling with a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs despite lofty expectations. What stung Durant most wasn’t the rumors themselves but how he learned about them. “Initially, I was a little upset because I felt like we built a solid relationship, me and the Phoenix Suns,” Durant revealed at the Summit. “To hear that from a different party was kind of upsetting.”

Despite the frustration, Durant quickly moved on, focusing on his next steps. Those steps culminated in a jaw-dropping trade on July 6, when the Suns sent him to the Houston Rockets in what ESPN’s Tim Bontemps called the largest trade in NBA history, involving seven teams. The move marked a new chapter for Durant, who joined a Rockets squad brimming with young talent and championship aspirations.

The Rockets’ acquisition of Durant was a bold roll of the dice. With the 2014 NBA MVP entering the final year of his contract, Houston knew they were betting big on a 37-year-old superstar (Durant turns 37 on September 29, 2025). Yet, the Rockets’ confidence in Durant’s enduring brilliance is unwavering. Bolstered by rising stars like Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Amen Thompson, plus savvy free-agent additions like Clint Capela, Josh Okogie, and Dorian Finney-Smith, Houston finished second in the Western Conference last season and sees Durant as the final piece of their championship puzzle.

According to The Athletic’s William Guillory, the Rockets are already laying the groundwork for a long-term commitment. “All signs point to Durant inking some form of an extension in the coming weeks that will tie him to Houston for the foreseeable future,” Guillory reported on September 10. However, the Rockets are prioritizing a rookie extension for Tari Eason, who also has one year left on his deal, before finalizing Durant’s contract. The belief around the league is that Houston is poised to lock in both players, signaling their all-in approach to building a contender.

Durant’s journey—from his championship glory with the Warriors to his tumultuous stints with the Nets and Suns—has been a rollercoaster of triumphs and challenges. Despite failing to return to the NBA Finals since leaving Golden State, Durant remains one of the league’s elite talents, capable of turning any team into a contender. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Rockets, the question looms: can KD lead Houston to the promised land and cement his legacy as one of the greatest ever?
