Kuminga, entering his fifth NBA season, averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 games last season, though he started only 10 games. His role diminished after the Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler midseason, but Kuminga’s youth and potential make him a highly sought-after talent who could flourish with a larger role elsewhere.
The Warriors’ financial constraints complicate their ability to re-sign Kuminga. With 85 percent of their payroll tied to Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, and the team already under the first apron, per Spotrac, committing significant money to Kuminga could limit their ability to build the depth needed to compete in the competitive Western Conference.
According to Marks, a sign-and-trade could be the most viable option for Golden State, but it comes with challenges. Kuminga would need to sign at least a three-year contract with the first year guaranteed, and only 50% of his outgoing salary would count in a trade. For example, a $30 million first-year salary would count as $15 million outgoing for the Warriors but $30 million incoming for the acquiring team, creating logistical hurdles.
Marks noted that Brooklyn is the only team with the cap space to offer Kuminga a starting salary of $20 million or more, and the Warriors would have the right to match any offer sheet. However, matching a high-value offer could push Golden State further into financial strain, making a sign-and-trade or even letting Kuminga walk a realistic possibility.
