The Los Angeles Lakers (39-25) are in the midst of one of their strongest stretches of the 2025-26 season, winning five of their last six games and climbing to fifth in the Western Conference. But a familiar question looms large heading into tonight’s high-stakes matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves (40-24, third in West): will LeBron James suit up?
Coach JJ Redick confirmed Monday that LeBron remains day-to-day with a right hip contusion, the same status he carried into recent absences (missed Friday vs. Pacers and Sunday vs. Knicks due to left elbow contusion and ongoing left foot arthritis management). James did not practice Monday, though he was present for film sessions focused on defensive clean-up.
The 41-year-old legend has already sat out consecutive games for the first time since his mid-November season debut (after missing the first 14 games with sciatica). He’s averaging 21.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 7.0 assists on 50.4% shooting across 44 games this season — elite production for any age, let alone his 23rd NBA campaign.
ESPN reported James went through an on-court workout Sunday morning, but his left foot didn’t respond well to post-workout treatment, contributing to the ongoing load management. The hip issue appears to be the latest in a series of minor but nagging injuries the Lakers are carefully monitoring with playoffs in sight.
Lakers Thriving in LeBron’s Absence – Dončić & Reaves Carrying the Load
The silver lining: Los Angeles is 9-2 this season in games where both Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves play while LeBron sits. In Sunday’s 110-97 win over the Knicks, Dončić erupted for 35 points (5-of-16 from three), and Reaves added 25 points and 5 assists. The duo’s chemistry has been electric, controlling tempo and creating easy looks even without James’ gravity.
The team’s defense has also trended sharply upward: No. 12 in defensive rating (111.7) over the last 10 games and No. 14 (112.3) since January 18. Players like Jake LaRavia credited the improvement to increased physicality, connectivity, and off-court chemistry.
Tonight’s Timberwolves Matchup – A Defining Test
Tuesday’s game against Minnesota (11 p.m. ET, Crypto.com Arena) is one of the Lakers’ biggest remaining home tests. The Timberwolves are just one game ahead in the standings and boast a top-10 offense and defense led by Anthony Edwards (29.6 PPG). It’s the first meeting between the teams in over four months — and Los Angeles already owns the season series (wins Oct. 24 at home, Oct. 30 on road).
Redick previewed the challenge:
“They’re an awesome team. Top-10 in offense, top-10 in defense. They’re able to generate threes, they’re able to score at the rim. [Ayo] Dosunmu has been a fantastic replacement for Nickeil Alexander-Walker… It’s a daunting task. They’re a really good basketball team.”
If LeBron sits (or is limited), the burden falls even heavier on Dončić, Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and the supporting cast. A win keeps LA firmly in the top-five conversation and within striking distance of homecourt advantage.
Off-Court Empire Keeps Growing
While the on-court focus remains on health and chemistry, LeBron’s off-court empire continues to expand. Forbes’ 2026 World’s Billionaires List quietly confirmed he’s crossed the $1.3 billion net worth mark — driven by AI investments, sizzling market gains, and massive endorsement deals (Nike lifetime contract worth north of $1 billion, paying ~$32 million annually with equity; PepsiCo, AT&T, etc.). He became the first active NBA player to reach billionaire status in June 2022 — Michael Jordan didn’t hit the mark until 2014, over a decade after retiring.
Lakers Nation, LeBron day-to-day again — but the team is rolling even without him. How concerned are you about the hip contusion? Can Dončić and Reaves carry another big game if needed, or does the offense truly need LeBron’s gravity to peak? Do you think he plays tonight, or do the Lakers rest him for a bigger stretch run?
