Los Angeles Bombshell: Insider Reveals LA’s Secret Core Trade Piece That Could Actually Land Giannis.

The Los Angeles Lakers have never shied away from making blockbuster moves to bolster their roster, and their history is littered with bold trades and signings that have shaped the franchise’s legacy. Just last year, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka pulled off a franchise-altering deal by acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks, securing a cornerstone for the team’s future. However, the Lakers’ ambitions may not stop there. According to one insider, the team could be positioning itself to chase another superstar: Milwaukee Bucks’ forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

A Blockbuster Trade in the Making?

Lakers insider Anthony Irwin, speaking on Lakers Lounge, revealed that the Lakers might have the assets to pursue a trade for the two-time NBA MVP. Irwin suggested that discussions for Antetokounmpo could heat up around the trade deadline or later in the season, with one player emerging as the centerpiece of any potential deal: Austin Reaves.

“It’s almost a surefire thing that if the Lakers and the Bucks get into trade negotiations for Giannis, the first name in terms of players that Milwaukee is going to ask about is Reaves,” Irwin stated. “And then it’s like, well, ‘Do you want Giannis or do you want to try to keep Reaves here?’”

Reaves, a rising star known for his versatility and clutch performances, has become a fan favorite in Los Angeles. However, acquiring a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber would require significant sacrifice, and Irwin believes Reaves would be the starting point in trade talks.

Emptying the Cupboard for Giannis

Landing Antetokounmpo would be no small feat. The Bucks, who view their superstar as the cornerstone of their franchise, would only consider trading him if he explicitly demands a move. Even then, Milwaukee would demand a king’s ransom in return. To make the deal work, the Lakers would need to offer a package that includes multiple first-round picks, pick swaps, Rui Hachimura, and likely another key player to match salaries and sweeten the deal.

Antetokounmpo’s value is undeniable. In the 2024-25 season, the Greek Freak averaged an impressive 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 60.1% from the field. Though his three-point shooting (22.2%) remains a work in progress, his dominance in the paint and ability to impact both ends of the floor make him one of the NBA’s premier talents.

The Cost of Chasing Greatness

The Lakers’ pursuit of Antetokounmpo would signal their intent to pair him with Doncic, creating a superstar duo capable of dominating the league for years to come. However, the cost of such a trade could deplete the team’s depth and future assets. In addition to Reaves and Hachimura, the Lakers might need to part with promising young players and draft capital, leaving their roster thin beyond their star duo.

For Pelinka and the Lakers’ front office, the question becomes whether the opportunity to add a player like Antetokounmpo outweighs the risk of dismantling a carefully constructed supporting cast. Reaves, in particular, has proven to be a valuable asset, often serving as a secondary playmaker and a reliable scorer. Trading him could create holes in the lineup that would need to be addressed.

The Bucks’ Stance

On the Milwaukee side, trading Antetokounmpo remains a last resort. The Bucks are committed to building around their superstar, who led them to an NBA championship in 2021. Unless Antetokounmpo expresses a desire to leave, Milwaukee is unlikely to entertain trade offers. However, if the situation changes, the Lakers could be one of the few teams with the assets and ambition to make a serious push.

A New Era for the Lakers?

The idea of pairing Luka Doncic with Giannis Antetokounmpo is a tantalizing prospect for Lakers fans. The combination of Doncic’s playmaking and scoring prowess with Antetokounmpo’s defensive dominance and interior presence could create a dynasty in Los Angeles. However, pulling off such a trade would require bold decision-making and a willingness to part with key pieces like Austin Reaves.

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Lakers and their front office. Will they make another splash to land a second superstar, or will they stick with their current core? Only time will tell, but if Irwin’s insights are any indication, the Lakers are ready to swing big once again.
