LOS ANGELES GET A BOMBSHELL: Lakers get good Daniel Gafford trade news

In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers have received encouraging news regarding a potential trade for Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford. This revelation comes at a pivotal time for the Lakers, who are looking to bolster their roster around superstar Luka Doncic and build a championship contender.

Daniel Gafford, the 6-foot-10 athletic big man, has long been viewed as an ideal fit for the Lakers. During his time with the Mavericks, Gafford showcased his skills as a rim-runner and lob threat, perfectly complementing Doncic’s playmaking abilities. The duo’s chemistry was instrumental in Dallas’ run to the Western Conference title in 2024, making Gafford an asset the Lakers would have loved to acquire before last year’s trade deadline.

Although no deal materialized then, fresh reports indicate that Gafford could be a realistic target for Los Angeles this summer. According to ESPN’s Kevin Pelton, the Mavericks’ recent organizational changes might open the door for negotiations.

“Between missing the playoffs in 2023 and winning the West a year later, Dallas drafted a rim-running center in Dereck Lively II and acquired another via trade in Daniel Gafford,” Pelton wrote. “The Mavericks also found two defensive-minded forwards in Derrick Jones Jr. (free agency) and P.J. Washington (trade), who also provided enough shooting to space the floor. If Dallas is willing to do business with the Lakers again after firing its general manager who made the Doncic trade (Nico Harrison), Gafford and Washington would be sensible trade targets this summer.”

This potential reunion could be a game-changer for the Lakers. Since Doncic’s blockbuster trade to Los Angeles last season, the team has been searching for pieces that replicate the successful formula from his Dallas days. Gafford’s style—running the floor hard in transition, finishing lobs, and protecting the rim—aligns seamlessly with the Lakers’ needs.

While Gafford may not top the Lakers’ wish list, he remains a high-priority option. At 27 years old, he’s in his prime and continues to deliver despite the changes in Dallas. This season, Gafford is averaging 8.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, shooting an impressive 63.4% from the field in 37 contests.

However, the path to a deal isn’t without obstacles. Recent reports suggest lingering resentment in Dallas over the Doncic trade, with some sources indicating the Mavericks are reluctant to engage with the Lakers. Despite this, Pelton’s analysis highlights Gafford as a “sensible” target if relations thaw, especially post-Nico Harrison’s departure.

Reuniting Doncic with Gafford could pay immediate dividends, providing the Lakers with a dynamic frontcourt presence to pair with Anthony Davis and elevate their defense. As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on whether the Mavericks’ front office is open to mending fences and facilitating this bombshell move.

For Lakers fans, this news injects a dose of optimism into what has been a challenging season. If executed, it could be the spark needed to propel Los Angeles back into title contention. Stay tuned as trade rumors continue to swirl.
