NBA Insider Provides Unfortunate Update on Al Horford Free Agency

As the NBA free agency period stretches into its second month, former five-time All-Star and Boston Celtics big man Al Horford remains without a contract, leaving fans and analysts speculating about his next move. Despite interest from multiple teams, the 38-year-old power forward/center appears to be in a holding pattern, with his future potentially tied to the Golden State Warriors’ ongoing roster decisions.

According to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein, Horford is among several players, including De’Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II, waiting on the Warriors to resolve their stalled negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. The 22-year-old Kuminga, a rising star in Golden State’s lineup, has yet to agree to terms on a reported two-year, $45 million offer from the Warriors. The sticking points? A team option in the second year and a request for Kuminga to waive his right to block trades in the first year, per Stein. These conditions, tied to Kuminga’s One-Year Bird classification, have created a stalemate that’s holding up other potential signings, including Horford’s.

For Horford, a return to the Boston Celtics could be a compelling option. With Kristaps Porzingis no longer in the picture, the door is wide open for Horford to reclaim a starting role at power forward or center. However, Boston’s championship aspirations have taken a significant hit following All-Star forward Jayson Tatum’s devastating Achilles tendon tear last spring, making a title run unlikely for the foreseeable future. This reality could push Horford to consider other contenders, like the Warriors, who are still vying for a spot among the Western Conference elite.

The delay in Golden State’s decision-making also carries implications for Kuminga’s participation in the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket tournament. Stein notes that the ongoing contract dispute, combined with the risk of injury, has made Kuminga hesitant to compete internationally this summer. Until the Warriors finalize their plans, Horford and other free agents remain in limbo, waiting for clarity.

As the offseason drags on, Horford’s patience will be tested. Will he hold out for a chance to join a contender like Golden State, or could a return to Boston—where he’s long been a fan favorite—become the more appealing path? For now, the veteran big man’s future remains uncertain, leaving NBA fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in his storied career.
