NBA Rumors: LeBron James expected to pick up $52.6 million option to stay with Lakers and Luka Doncic

In a move that could shape the future of the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is reportedly set to accept his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

LeBron James is making headlines once again, as he plans to pick up his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 NBA season. This news, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania on “The Pat McAfee Show,” has fans buzzing about what this means for the Lakers’ future. With the deadline to make this decision looming on June 29, James is also looking to have crucial conversations with the Lakers about potential roster improvements.

The Lakers made waves earlier this year with a massive trade for Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic. The deal, which sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, was a bold move that paid off with an 18-10 record with Doncic in the lineup. However, the trade left a significant gap at the center position, especially after a deal for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams fell through. This has left the Lakers with some critical decisions to make in the offseason.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers‘ president of basketball operations and general manager, has made it clear that the team will prioritize adding a center in free agency. This focus comes after the Lakers finished the season with a 50-32 record, only to be upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The loss was compounded by James suffering a Grade 2 MCL sprain in the team’s final game, adding to the urgency of strengthening the roster.

Despite the early playoff exit, LeBron James had an impressive season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal per game over 70 regular-season contests. His performance earned him a spot on the All-NBA second team, proving that even at 40, he’s still a force to be reckoned with on the court.

If he suits up next season, James will set an NBA record for most seasons played at 23, further cementing his legacy in world’s best basketball league.

As the Lakers look to bounce back, the potential addition of a strong center could be the missing piece they need. With LeBron James and Luka Doncic leading the charge, the team has the talent to make a deep playoff run. However, the front office’s ability to fill the void in the paint will be crucial in determining their success next season.
