NOT GIANNIS, BUT HIM: Luka Dončić’s Terrifying Old Friend Is Heading to LA — and the Western Conference Balance Is About to Be Completely Upset.

In a blockbuster move that’s set to send shockwaves through the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of reuniting Luka Dončić with his former Dallas Mavericks teammate, Daniel Gafford. While rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially forcing his way out of Milwaukee have dominated headlines, it’s Gafford—not the Greek Freak—who’s poised to join forces with Dončić in purple and gold. This reunion could tip the scales in the Western Conference, creating a terrifying pick-and-roll tandem that defenses won’t know how to handle.

Gafford: The Perfect Fit for Dončić’s Game

Forget the pipe dreams of landing Antetokounmpo; Gafford represents a realistic, high-impact addition that aligns perfectly with the Lakers’ needs. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Mavericks are actively exploring trade options for several veterans, including Gafford, as they look to retool their roster. NBA insider Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report highlighted Gafford as a prime target for LA, noting his proven chemistry with Dončić from their Finals run together.

“The Lakers are still undoubtedly going to be looking for long-term pick-and-roll lob threat pairings for Luka Dončić and also for Austin Reaves—but particularly for Luka Dončić,” Fischer explained. “And who better to go after than someone who had massive success alongside Dončić in Dallas, where they made the finals together.”

Averaging 8.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks on 61% shooting, Gafford has been a rim-running force and defensive anchor. His ability to finish lobs and protect the paint would complement Dončić’s playmaking genius, who himself is putting up MVP-caliber numbers.

Dončić’s 35.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game have the Lakers humming, but adding Gafford’s vertical spacing and rim protection could elevate them to unstoppable status.

Why Gafford Over Ayton? The Defensive Edge

Current Lakers center DeAndre Ayton has been solid, posting impressive offensive numbers.

With 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds on a scorching 70.6% from the field, Ayton ranks among the league’s top finishers. However, his defensive impact has been lackluster compared to elite rim protectors. Ayton’s block rate doesn’t deter drivers as effectively, and his game leans more toward mid-range scoring than the explosive pick-and-roll threat the Lakers crave.

In contrast, Gafford’s defensive timing and athleticism make him a better fit to alleviate pressure on Dončić defensively. Plus, Ayton’s $8.1 million player option looms large—he could opt out if his stock rises, leaving LA in a bind. Trading for Gafford, whose three-year, $54 million extension was designed with trade flexibility in mind, avoids that risk.

“They avoided the six-month trade restriction… keeping up that flexibility and optionality for him to get dealt,” Fischer added.

The Lakers have the pieces to make it happen, with contracts like Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent providing matching salary. “They have a good chunk if they combine Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent,” Fischer noted. Expect the deal to involve minimal draft capital, making it a steal for a player who could transform the frontcourt.

Giannis: The Dream That Remains Just That

While Gafford’s arrival is imminent, the Antetokounmpo saga continues to simmer. Charania reported that Giannis and his agent, Alex Saratsis, have opened discussions about his future amid the Bucks’ dismal 9-13 start.

Antetokounmpo’s stats remain elite—28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists—but Milwaukee’s struggles have fueled trade speculation.

“Conversations have started,” Charania posted on X. “A resolution is expected in the coming weeks.”

Yet, as Dan Woike of The Athletic points out, the Lakers aren’t positioned to win a bidding war. “I don’t think the Lakers are particularly close,” Woike said on Lakers Lounge. “It would have to get very ugly for Milwaukee to take pennies on the dollar.” LA’s best offer might include three future firsts and cap space, but Woike summed it up: “That’s the offer. And that’s not good enough.”

The Western Conference Shake-Up

With Gafford heading to LA, the Western Conference is about to get flipped upside down. Pairing him with Dončić recreates the magic that propelled Dallas to the Finals, but now in a star-studded Lakers lineup. This move isn’t just a tweak—it’s a statement. The Lakers are going all-in for a title, and rivals like the Nuggets, Thunder, and Clippers better brace themselves. The balance of power is shifting, and it’s terrifying for everyone else.
