De’Anthony Melton is in the midst of his second season with the Golden State Warriors, and he has quietly become one of their most reliable contributors.

After missing significant time last season due to injury, the 27-year-old guard is averaging 13.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game across 42 contests this year. He’s shooting 41.5% from the field and 28.8% from beyond the arc while playing about 23 minutes per night.
In a recent interview with 95.7 The Game, Melton was asked about his player option for the 2026-27 season. His response was telling:
“I’ve been in this league a decent amount of time… I’ve put in a lot of time, effort and work into this… I think that should be rewarded… At the end of the day, you want to get rewarded for your services.”
If Melton declines his option and tests free agency this summer, he could become an attractive target for many teams around the NBA. That would mean the Warriors risk losing one of their most valuable role players — a versatile defender and scorer who has stepped up when needed.
Melton’s NBA Journey So Far
Selected 46th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft out of USC, Melton has carved out a solid career over eight seasons. He has suited up for the Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and now the Warriors (with a brief stop in Brooklyn).
His career averages stand at 9.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game across 398 regular-season appearances, with solid shooting splits of 41.1% from the field and 35.8% from three. He has also seen action in 27 playoff games.
This season, Melton has delivered several highlight moments, including a clutch putback in overtime for 23 points that sealed a win for Golden State.
Where the Warriors Stand
Currently, the Warriors sit as the 10th seed in the Western Conference with a 35-38 record through 73 games. They are riding a modest two-game winning streak but sit at 3-7 over their last ten outings.
On Friday night, they return home to Chase Center to host the Washington Wizards.
Melton has been a steadying presence on both ends of the floor, providing scoring punch off the bench (or in the starting lineup at times), defensive intensity, and playmaking. His ability to chip in 13+ points efficiently while logging heavy defensive minutes has made him an unsung hero in an injury-affected season for the Dubs.
If he walks in free agency, Golden State will feel the loss — not just in the box score, but in the locker room and on the court, where his energy and versatility have been hard to replace.
The Warriors’ front office will have some tough decisions to make this offseason. For now, Melton continues to play out the string, putting in the work he believes deserves proper recognition. Whether he stays in the Bay Area or takes his game elsewhere remains one of the more intriguing subplots for Golden State heading into the summer.
