Patriots May Soon Sign Christian Wilkins – Former Raiders Defensive Linchpin in a Stunning Deal

The New England Patriots are reportedly considering a significant addition to their defensive line, with head coach Mike Vrabel confirming interest in veteran defensive lineman Christian Wilkins. Just one day after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, Wilkins has emerged as a prime target for the Patriots, who are looking to bolster their defense following a disappointing 4-13 season in 2024.

Vrabel, in his first year as head coach of the Patriots, has a longstanding connection with Wilkins, having recruited him during his time as a coach at Ohio State. Although Wilkins ultimately chose Clemson over Ohio State, Vrabel’s familiarity with the player could play a pivotal role in negotiations. “I mean I think we’ll have a conversation … I’ve known Christian, recruited him when he was up here in the area in Connecticut going to high school, so I’m sure we’ll have a conversation about it,” Vrabel said during a recent press conference.

Wilkins’ release from the Raiders came amid controversy. The 29-year-old defensive lineman suffered a Jones Fracture in his foot just five games into the 2024 season, leading to a disagreement with the Raiders over his recovery plan. According to NFL Network, the Raiders pushed for surgical intervention, while Wilkins opted for rehabilitation. This discord led to the team placing him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before training camp and ultimately voiding the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money on his four-year, $110 million contract. Wilkins has since filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association to contest the decision.

Despite the tumultuous end to his tenure with the Raiders, Wilkins remains a highly coveted player. Over his five-year career with the Miami Dolphins, he started 77 games, including every game from 2021 to 2023. His stat line is impressive: 355 combined tackles, 43 tackles for a loss, 50 quarterback hits, 20.5 sacks, 19 passes defended, six fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles. His versatility and durability make him an attractive option for a Patriots defense in need of a spark.

Vrabel has already made significant moves to strengthen the Patriots’ defense in free agency, bringing in players like defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis, edge rusher Harold Landry, and linebacker Robert Spillane. However, the team’s defensive performance in 2024 fell short of expectations, prompting the linebacker-turned-coach to explore further upgrades. Adding a player of Wilkins’ caliber could be a game-changer for a unit looking to rebound in 2025.

The potential signing of Wilkins would mark a stunning turn of events, given his high-profile contract with the Raiders last offseason. For the Patriots, securing Wilkins could provide the defensive linchpin they need to turn around their fortunes and make a strong statement in the upcoming season.

As discussions progress, all eyes will be on New England to see if Vrabel can leverage his prior connection with Wilkins to finalize a deal that could reshape the Patriots’ defense.
