Rashod Bateman reveals Cowboys talks lasted weeks before shock Ravens extension

In a stunning turn of events, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman has revealed that trade discussions with the Dallas Cowboys lingered for weeks before he ultimately secured a lucrative three-year, $36.75 million contract extension with the Ravens, tying him to Baltimore through 2029. The 2021 first-round pick’s future with the team hung in the balance after a career-defining season, leaving him wondering if he had played his final snap in purple and black.

According to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec, Bateman admitted to being deeply involved in trade talks with the Cowboys, a situation that left him uncertain about his NFL home. “I went through a lot of things with the Cowboys and all of that with my contract,” Bateman shared. “There was a time when I didn’t know what was going to happen. (The Cowboys talks) were a thing, for sure. It was a possibility. I don’t want to deny that.”

The trade rumors stemmed from Bateman’s push for a new contract following a breakout 2024 season. The 25-year-old wideout delivered a career-high 46 receptions for 756 yards and nine touchdowns, showcasing his explosive playmaking ability. His postseason heroics were even more impressive, with touchdowns in both of Baltimore’s playoff games, proving he had finally found his rhythm after early career struggles. However, his failure to report to training camp earlier in his career cost him an accrued season, voiding his fifth-year option and complicating his contract negotiations.

Despite the uncertainty, Bateman’s heart remained with the Ravens. He recalled a candid conversation with General Manager Eric DeCosta, where he made his intentions clear: “That’s the first thing I told [DeCosta]: I don’t want to go anywhere else. ‘I know you’ve got a lot of stuff to work through and we’ll figure it out when we figure it out.’” Bateman’s patience paid off, as DeCosta, known for his knack for navigating complex deals, worked his magic to keep the talented receiver in Baltimore.

The road to this extension wasn’t without its challenges. Injuries, criticism, and mounting pressure marked Bateman’s early years in the NFL, testing his resilience. Yet, his perseverance and undeniable talent shone through in 2024, earning him the trust and commitment of the Ravens’ front office. “It took time, but it takes time with a lot of people’s contracts,” Bateman noted. “He had a lot of contracts to get done, and maybe more to get done in the future. To be a priority for him in that way is important. He shows he values me.”

Now, with the trade rumors and contract saga firmly in the past, Bateman is poised for a bright future in Baltimore. Healthy, confident, and coming off a career-best season, he’s ready to build on his momentum and cement his role as a cornerstone of the Ravens’ offense. The Cowboys may have come close to landing him, but thanks to DeCosta’s deal-making prowess, Baltimore fans can look forward to seeing Bateman light up the field through 2029.
