ROCKETS DROP A BOMBSHELL! The 2-Time Finals MVP KEVIN DURANT & “The Dream” Unite For An Unprecedented Houston Collaboration

The Houston Rockets organization has always prided itself on connecting its past glory to its present and future — and on Monday (February 9, 2026), they delivered one of the most meaningful moments in recent franchise history.

Kevin Durant sat down with Hakeem Olajuwon — “The Dream,” the greatest player in Rockets history — for an exclusive interview on Durant’s Boardroom YouTube channel. The setting was the luxurious Post Oak Hotel in Houston (owned by Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta), and the conversation was as deep, respectful, and insightful as you’d expect from two future Hall of Famers.

They also stepped onto the mini court inside the hotel suite to work on post moves together — a passing of the torch that felt both nostalgic and forward-looking.

Key Moments from the KD–Hakeem Interview

Mutual Respect from the Start Durant opened with pure admiration:

“It’s a true honor to be in your presence. You’re an icon. Hakeem Olajuwon, one of the greatest players to walk the Earth.”

Olajuwon laughed and smiled — the humility and warmth between them was immediate.

Olajuwon’s Incredible Resume Recap KD listed out the accolades:

2× NBA Champion (1994, 1995)2× Finals MVP1994 NBA MVP12× All-NBA9× All-DefenseAll-time leader in blocks (3,830)18 seasons, 1,200+ games, ~22 PPG, ~11 RPG, 26,000+ points, 13,000+ rebounds

It was a reminder of just how dominant Olajuwon was — and why he remains the undisputed greatest Rocket ever.

Olajuwon’s Journey from Nigeria Hakeem shared that in Nigeria, education was prioritized — sports were often seen as not serious. He only started playing seriously in his senior year of high school at 6’9″. Durant joked that Olajuwon was “built like KD” back then — tall and skinny — before adding that he thinks KD is stronger than he looks.

The Twin Towers Era & 1986 Finals Olajuwon talked about playing with Ralph Sampson — the “Twin Towers” — and how Sampson’s presence gave him confidence early on. They made the 1986 Finals (lost to the Celtics), beating the Showtime Lakers in the West Finals. Sampson was traded the next year, and Olajuwon became the undisputed alpha.

Olajuwon’s Love for Shot-Blocking KD was fascinated to hear that Olajuwon enjoyed blocking shots more than anything else — even scoring. It’s a mindset that shaped his defensive dominance.

The Modern Game & 3-Point Revolution Olajuwon said he actually enjoys the current era’s emphasis on 3-point shooting — finds it funny when players drive, collapse the defense, then kick out for an open three. KD brought up Joel Embiid as someone who models his game after the old-school bigs.

Durant on Life in Houston & Playing with Şengün KD reflected on his first season in Houston:

“It’s been fun, he [Şengün] gets me open shots. I’ve never played with a big like him before that can do it all on the offensive end. The centers I played with focused on screens and good defense. It’s been an adjustment.”

He also praised the young core:

“It’s a tight-knit group, they’re all learning together. I’m loving it here. I love being part of the Rockets. Every time I go to the arena, I look up at the retired jerseys. It makes me go harder. If I put in enough work, I can hopefully be with y’all.”

The line drew laughs and nods from Olajuwon — a subtle nod to the possibility of his own jersey someday hanging in Toyota Center.

Why This Moment Matters

This wasn’t just an interview — it was a bridge between the Rockets’ golden era (Hakeem’s back-to-back titles in 1994–95) and their current rising chapter (Durant + Şengün + young core pushing for top-4 in the West at 32-19).

Olajuwon’s workouts with Şengün were already famous — now Durant gets to learn directly from The Dream. The respect, humility, and shared love of the game made this feel like a true passing-of-the-torch moment.
