SPURS MOCK THE ROCKETS! Why San Antonio Passing on Kevin Durant Was a Masterstroke and Absolutely Correct — THE FAILURE OF MANY TEAMS STEMS FROM VETERANS DRAINING EVERYTHING.

Last summer, the San Antonio Spurs were reportedly very close to recruiting Kevin Durant. The entire media predicted that the superstar might wear a Spurs jersey, bringing immense appeal to the Alamo City. However, the front office ultimately decided not to pursue the deal.

Instead of “burning money” to get a legend, the Spurs maintained their financial flexibility and focused on free agency. With that capital, GM Brian Wright pulled off a surprise but incredibly smart move: signing Luke Kornet.

Deciding not to pursue Durant turned out to be a brilliant maneuver.

Avoiding Kevin Durant – A Smart Move by the Spurs

In theory, adding a world-class player like Durant would significantly increase championship odds. He is a former regular-season MVP and Finals MVP, having proven his ability to win everywhere he goes. Durant is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in history. But that doesn’t mean he comes without issues.

I don’t want to speculate on the latest drama regarding his burner accounts, but there is a clear reality: since leaving Golden State in 2019, Durant has left a trail of “pain” at his new teams. Both his stints in Brooklyn and Phoenix ended in disappointment, and now Houston is also on the verge of collapsing. Each team failed to meet massive expectations and looked foolish for recruiting Durant.

That is not what a young team like the Spurs needs. San Antonio’s current roster is a gritty, fiery group built on youth and hunger. They take pride in themselves, built from the ground up, and deeply value playing together. This is exactly what makes Luke Kornet the perfect signing.

Luke Kornet Is a Superior Choice Over Durant for the Spurs

The former NBA champion brings exactly what the Spurs need:

  • No demand for high minutes or high usage like Durant.

  • Always ready to step onto the court when called and give his all.

  • A perfect fit for the Spurs’ identity: tough, joyful on the court, and high team spirit.

  • No personal ego, loved by teammates.

Most importantly regarding the roster: the Spurs’ biggest hole before the offseason was the backup center position. They needed someone who could substitute for Victor Wembanyama, allowing him proper rest. Luke Kornet has performed better than expected in this role.

The Spurs Are Lucky to Have Smart Leaders

Who knows what would have happened if the Spurs had Durant? Perhaps they would be stronger, but it would be very difficult to have a fairytale season like the current one. The Spurs are thriving on success from the draft and free agency, building their roster from the foundation and taking pride in it.

Avoiding Kevin Durant turned out to be the wisest move. Luke Kornet isn’t just a signing—he is a symbol of the Spurs’ team-building philosophy: focus on the collective, don’t chase stars, and maximize what you have.

Spurs fans: enjoy it. This isn’t about luck—this is the result of long-term vision and consistency. Kevin Durant may be a legend, but Luke Kornet is the right fit for the Spurs at the right time.
