THE COWBOYS’ PRACTICE SQUAD BOMBSHELL! Former First-Team All-ACC Star Added in Move That Could Reshape Backfield

As Javonte Williams continues to shoulder a heavy workload in the Dallas Cowboys’ ground game, the team is actively seeking quality backup options. The signing of Israel Abanikanda – former University of Pittsburgh star – to the practice squad is seen as a strategic move to bolster depth, while simultaneously raising questions about rookie Jaydon Blue’s position.

Javonte Williams’ impressive stats (955 yards, 8 touchdowns) are overshadowed by the reality that he’s taking too much punishment. The lack of a reliable RB2 has forced the Cowboys to take action. Following Malik Davis’ impressive showing against the Chiefs, adding Abanikanda represents the next step in diversifying their options at the position.

Abanikanda was a phenomenon at the University of Pittsburgh with 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns in his final season. Though he hasn’t made much impact at the NFL level (just 6 games in 3 seasons), his physique and powerful playing style remain highly regarded.

Meanwhile, fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue is gradually losing his footing. His impressive speed (sub-4.4 40-yard dash) hasn’t been enough to secure a stable spot in the lineup. Continuously being placed behind Davis and now the arrival of Abanikanda makes Blue’s future in Dallas increasingly uncertain.

The decision to sign Abanikanda shows the Cowboys are serious about building running back depth. With Williams proving his worth and Davis unexpectedly shining, Abanikanda will serve as a promising backup option. Conversely, Blue needs to improve his form quickly if he wants to remain part of the team’s long-term plans.
