It appears the Miami Heat believe you can never have enough guards. Despite entering training camp with a backcourt surplus before a series of injuries struck—most of which have now healed sufficiently for returns—the team has added another guard, signing Jahmir Young to a two-way contract.

Jahmir Young, a collegiate standout from Charlotte and Maryland who has spent time within the Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls organizations, received the Heat’s final two-way spot following a strong showing in preseason games. At 6-foot-1, Young is known as a natural scorer. He joins wing Myron Gardner and big man Vlad Goldin in occupying Miami’s three two-way slots.
Finding minutes for Young presents a significant challenge, even in the event of further injuries. Miami’s backcourt is already exceptionally crowded, with Tyler Herro expected back soon, alongside Norman Powell, Dru Smith, Davion Mitchell, Pelle Larsson, and Terry Rozier—all before 2025 first-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis even gets his opportunity.
Nevertheless, the need for pure scorers is real, and Young has proven to be just that, even if primarily at the G-League level with the Windy City Bulls—including a 36-point outburst against the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat’s own G-League affiliate.
Meanwhile, the need for another big man remains a consideration for the Heat. However, the team may wait to give Vlad Goldin a chance to prove himself, or hold until December to add a standard contract player without crossing the luxury tax line, as they aim to avoid entering the punitive repeater tax territory.
