Warriors SIGN VETERAN CENTER after his contract with Celtics ends – The 6’10” big man JOINS GOLDEN STATE for playoff run, REPLACES YURTSEVEN after his two 10-day contracts expire

The Golden State Warriors are adding frontcourt depth for the final stretch of the regular season and the upcoming play-in tournament, agreeing to sign free-agent center Charles Bassey for the remainder of the year, according to sources.

The 6-foot-10 big man becomes available after his second 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics expired on Friday night. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype was the first to report the planned signing.

Addressing a Depleted Frontcourt

Bassey joins a Warriors team that is extremely shorthanded in the paint. Veteran center Al Horford remains sidelined with a calf strain, having missed the last 11 games. The absence has forced Golden State to rely on smaller lineups and limited options at the 5, contributing to a 4-7 record during that stretch.

With Horford’s return timeline still uncertain (he has progressed to light on-court work but is not yet cleared for full team activities), Bassey provides an immediate physical presence and backup option at center. His size, rebounding, and rim protection will be valuable as the Warriors push for better play-in positioning and prepare for the postseason.

Bassey’s Recent Stints and Background

Bassey appeared in five games for the Celtics after signing a pair of 10-day deals following Nikola Vucevic’s finger injury. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in limited minutes. Prior to Boston, he had brief hardship stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies this season.

Originally drafted 53rd overall by the Sixers in 2021, Bassey spent the last three seasons as a backup center for the San Antonio Spurs. Last year, he averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game across 36 appearances.

In the G League this season, Bassey has shown strong production, averaging 20.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in nearly 30 minutes per game — numbers that highlight his ability to dominate the paint when given opportunity.

“Everything in basketball is just an opportunity,” Bassey told MassLive last week after signing with Boston. “You don’t know when your time is going to come, so you just have to stay ready. I feel like every time, it’s just me getting closer to me playing regular minutes in the league again. It’s been good. Getting a 10-day means you still have one foot in the NBA. It’s just a matter of time.”

Celtics Roster Moves

Boston filled Bassey’s spot on the 15-man roster by promoting two-way wing Ron Harper Jr. to a standard contract on Saturday, bringing the roster total back to 14. The Celtics will still have the ability to sign a 15th man ahead of the postseason but are likely to wait until next weekend to stay under the luxury tax.

Final Word

The signing of Charles Bassey is a low-risk, practical move to help the Warriors manage their frontcourt injuries as they head into the final weeks of the regular season and the play-in tournament. While not a star addition, Bassey provides much-needed size and rebounding depth behind a potentially returning Al Horford.

With Stephen Curry also expected back soon, the Warriors are doing what they can to stabilize the roster and give themselves the best chance to make a competitive postseason push. Every bit of frontcourt help matters in a tightly contested Western Conference.

Warriors fans, what’s your reaction? Is Charles Bassey a solid depth addition to help bridge the gap until Horford returns, or do you think the team needs a bigger frontcourt upgrade? How important is getting both Curry and Horford healthy for the play-in? Let us know in the comments below.

The final stretch of the season will be critical for Golden State. With reinforcements on the way, the Warriors are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive.
