“NOBODY IS SCARED OF THEM”: Stan Van Gundy Drops Bombshell Take On Miami Heat’s Problematic Pair

MIAMI – The Miami Heat’s impressive 12-6 start has been one of the NBA’s early surprises, largely fueled by the frontcourt partnership of Bam Adebayo and rookie sensation Kel’el Ware. However, former coach and analyst Stan Van Gundy has thrown a strategic curveball, publicly questioning the offensive fit of the team’s two-big lineup and sparking a debate about its long-term viability.

While the Adebayo-Ware duo has been a cornerstone of Miami’s early success, Van Gundy argues their pairing creates a critical flaw on offense. On The Zach Lowe Show, he pointed to a lack of perimeter shooting and off-the-dribble creation as the core issue.

“The way the Heat are playing, it’s not a natural fit on the offensive end of the floor,” Van Gundy stated. “When they play them together, and now [Adebayo]’s being guarded by a perimeter guy, he’s not going to beat people off the dribble.”

He further explained that despite both players improving their three-point range, “nobody, at this point anyway, I would not think any other coaches are really scared of them,” implying defenses don’t yet respect their outside shot enough to create optimal spacing.

Van Gundy did concede that the pairing is “fine” defensively due to their versatility, but he firmly believes that in crunch time, Spoelstra should only have one of them on the floor to maximize offensive efficiency.

This creates a fascinating dilemma for the Heat. The lineup is clearly winning games, but Van Gundy’s analysis suggests it may have a ceiling that will be exposed against elite playoff defenses.

For now, Coach Spoelstra is unlikely to fix what isn’t broken. The Adebayo-Ware combo has been a catalyst for the Heat’s strong start. However, Van Gundy’s comments have planted a crucial seed. If Miami’s offense ever stagnates in high-leverage moments, this critique will resurface as the primary reason to reconsider their most successful—and most controversial—lineup.
