The Golden State Warriors announced Sunday that Jonathan Kuminga suffered a bone bruise in his left knee due to hyperextension during Thursday’s 123-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. The team will re-evaluate him “in the coming days.”

Kuminga had just returned to action in January after a long absence from Steve Kerr’s rotation:
- Tuesday vs. Raptors: 20 points in 21 minutes (first game in over a month).
- Thursday vs. Mavericks: 10 points in 9 minutes (3-3 FG, 4-4 FT) before exiting.
Total: 30 points in 30 minutes – strong showcase performances.
Speculation: Kuminga Sits Until After Deadline While initial tests showed no major structural damage, the timing suggests both the Warriors and Kuminga may agree to keep him sidelined through the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Reasons:
- Warriors have 5 games left before the deadline.
- No benefit in risking further injury to a player who wants out – a serious setback would tank his trade value.
- The goal was to showcase him – his two January games (30 points/30 minutes) already did that.
Playing now and aggravating the injury would make a trade much harder – the opposite of what both sides want.
Warriors’ Current Situation
- Team at 25-21, in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race.
- Missing Jimmy Butler (season-ending ACL) and Kuminga (injury + trade demand) – rotation thin.
- Curry (right knee soreness), Melton (rest), Horford (left toe) all questionable for Sunday’s rescheduled game vs. Timberwolves.
Golden State remains buyers ahead of Feb. 5, but a big move is unlikely without a strong return for Kuminga. If he sits until after the deadline, they could hold him through summer 2026 – hoping increased playing time (post-Butler) boosts his value.
