THE ALEX ERA IS OVER! The Argentine Is Linked With a Chelsea Exit This Month After Just 24 Appearances

Just six months after his blockbuster £40 million move from Manchester United to Chelsea, Alejandro Garnacho could already be on the move again – with Atletico Madrid emerging as a shock destination for the talented Argentine winger.

The 21-year-old sensation, who exploded onto the scene at Old Trafford, swapped red for blue at the end of last summer’s transfer window. Garnacho had risen through United’s academy ranks after arriving from Atletico Madrid’s youth system in 2020 for a modest £420,000, going on to lift both the FA Cup and League Cup while scoring 26 goals in 144 appearances.

However, a fallout with then-United boss Ruben Amorim saw him relegated to the infamous ‘bomb squad’ alongside the likes of Jadon Sancho (now on loan at Aston Villa), Marcus Rashford (loaned to Barcelona), and Antony (sold permanently to Real Betis for £21.65m). The writing was on the wall, and Chelsea pounced.

At Stamford Bridge, Garnacho has shown flashes of his brilliance, netting six times in 24 appearances. Yet regular starts have proved elusive, especially following the recent managerial shake-up that saw Enzo Maresca replaced by Liam Rosenior.

Now, according to respected Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid – the club where Garnacho’s journey began – are circling for a sensational loan return to his birthplace. The report claims Diego Simeone has personally green-lit the move, viewing the young attacker as the perfect fit for his high-intensity system.

“The club has been monitoring Garnacho’s progress for some time and believes his profile fits their search for young attacking talent, capable of making a difference in one-on-one situations,” the report states.

“The possibility of a loan is particularly attractive, as it would allow them to bring the player in without a large upfront outlay. The manager values the player’s intensity, dribbling ability, and competitive spirit – qualities that align perfectly with Atlético’s DNA.”

Sources suggest Garnacho himself is open to the idea, desperate for consistent minutes to secure his place in Argentina’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. With eight senior caps already to his name – earned thanks to his Argentine mother despite being born and raised in Madrid – the stakes couldn’t be higher.

A short-term switch to the Wanda Metropolitano would not only guarantee game time but also represent an emotional homecoming for the dazzling winger.

Is the short-lived “Alex era” at Chelsea truly over before it even began? The January window is heating up, and Garnacho’s next chapter could be written back where it all started. Watch this space.
