Chelsea, along with Liverpool and Manchester United, have received a massive boost to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League after the Premier League was awarded an extra qualification spot for the second consecutive year.

The English top flight’s impressive performances across the league phases of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League have secured a top-two finish in the UEFA European Performance Spot (EPS) table. The additional place was officially confirmed following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday night, where Kai Havertz came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner in Portugal.
This means the Premier League will have five automatic spots in next season’s expanded Champions League league phase — a huge development that dramatically improves Chelsea’s prospects.
As things stand, that would hand Champions League football to Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool. However, Chelsea — currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table — are now in a far stronger position than before.
The Blues are just one point behind fifth-placed Liverpool, compared to the previous six-point gap to Aston Villa. This single extra spot has suddenly made Champions League qualification a very realistic target for Chelsea this season.
Even teams further down the table are now dreaming: Brentford and Everton are only three points off the top five, while Fulham sit five points behind Liverpool with seven games remaining. Brighton and Sunderland are six points away.
According to BBC Sport, there is even a scenario where seven Premier League clubs could qualify for the Champions League next season. If Aston Villa and Liverpool finish fifth and sixth but one of them wins their respective European competition (Europa League or Champions League), the seventh-placed team could also sneak in.
Spain remain favourites to claim the other additional EPS spot, but Germany and Portugal are still in contention and could yet overtake them in the UEFA coefficient rankings.
For Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge, this is a game-changing development. What looked like a difficult mountain to climb has now become a genuine opportunity. With just a handful of points separating them from the promised land, the Blues have been handed a lifeline that could transform their entire 2025/26 campaign.
