DOUBLE BOOST REVEALED: Chelsea handed double injury boost as Moises Caicedo suspension truth laid bare

Chelsea have been handed a timely double injury boost in midfield ahead of a crucial run of fixtures, with Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo both closing in on first-team returns – just as the full extent of Moises Caicedo’s suspension risk has been laid bare.

Moises Caicedo

The Ecuadorian has already collected eight yellow cards in the Premier League this season and sits just two bookings away from an automatic two-match league ban if he picks them up before matchday 33. With five games remaining until that cut-off point, Liam Rosenior will be desperate for Caicedo to stay on the right side of the officials. Chelsea have already been without their star midfielder for five matches across all competitions this term – including a one-game ban after five yellows by matchday 19 and a three-match suspension for violent conduct against Arsenal in November.

Yet while the yellow-card cloud continues to hang over Caicedo, Rosenior’s squad depth is looking significantly healthier than at any point this season.

Romeo Lavia made his long-awaited comeback last week, playing the first 45 minutes for Chelsea’s Under-21s at Cobham – his first competitive action in three-and-a-half months. The 22-year-old Belgian was then named on the first-team bench for Saturday’s draw with Burnley, though Chelsea took no risks and left him unused. His availability is a major positive, and he is expected to be included in the travelling squad for this weekend’s trip to the Emirates.

At the same time, Dario Essugo has returned to first-team training after a frustrating campaign disrupted by injury. The 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder, signed last summer, has yet to make a senior appearance for the club. He underwent thigh surgery in September, returned to training in December, suffered an unrelated setback, and is now finally closing in on full fitness. Rosenior will provide the latest update on Essugo during Friday’s pre-match press conference, but if the youngster travels to Arsenal he would give the head coach five fit central midfield options for the first time this season: Caicedo, Lavia, Essugo, Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos.

The only lingering concern is Estevao Willian, who missed Saturday’s game with a hamstring issue and is set to undergo further assessment. An update on the Brazilian is also expected on Friday.

For Rosenior, the twin returns of Lavia and Essugo could not have come at a better moment – providing fresh legs and competition in midfield as Chelsea look to navigate the final stretch of the campaign with Caicedo’s suspension threat still very much alive.
