FROM STARS TO SNUBS: Luka & LeBron’s Duo Ranking Will Leave NBA Fans Furious!

The NBA offseason, when on-court activity has slowed, is a time for rankings and debates. One of the most controversial topics right now is whether the Los Angeles Lakers’ duo of Luka Doncic and LeBron James are being unfairly underestimated. Recently, on The Ringer NBA Show, Michael Pina and Howard Beck omitted the pair from their list of the top five duos in the NBA, relegating them to an “honorable mention.” This assessment has sparked a strong backlash.

1. The Flawed Arguments from Pundits

The reasons given by Pina and Beck for leaving Luka and LeBron out of the top five seem to be full of holes.

Defensive Concerns: Pina cited defense as a major factor. This is a strange argument, especially considering the strong defensive campaign that LeBron James, in particular, had in the 2024-25 season. The insinuation quickly comes across as an assessment of reputation over results.

Compatibility Issues: Pina also questioned the compatibility of the two superstars, suggesting they might not be able to get the best out of one another. While it’s true that Doncic and James have some overlap in their skill sets, this argument overlooks a crucial fact: LeBron has already proven his willingness and adaptability to play off-ball more last season. The myth that LeBron cannot and does not play off the ball is just that, a myth.

Off-Court Doubts: Howard Beck added concerns about the “cloud” that LeBron has put over the Lakers, alluding to off-court drama. However, any dissatisfaction that may exist beyond the basketball court is not an irrelevant topic, but it’s ultimately far from the key factor it gets propped up as. James has always been a professional and will deliver when it’s time to play.

2. The On-Paper and On-Court Superstar Talent

On paper, there should be no doubt that the Lakers possess the most talented duo in the NBA. Doncic and James are both among the best players in the league at their respective positions. However, basketball is not played on paper. That said, the arguments made by the pundits seem to be grasping at straws and are not an accurate reflection of reality.

The Doncic and James duo offers a rare combination of ball-handling, playmaking, and scoring. With Doncic’s masterful offensive mind and James’s all-around game, they can create an almost unstoppable offensive system. While having two primary ball handlers at once can be a challenge, it’s also a significant advantage, allowing the Lakers to attack from multiple angles and always have a superstar on the court.

3. Comparing to Other Duos

To highlight the absurdity of this assessment, let’s look at the duos that Pina and Beck ranked ahead of them. Beck ranked Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler higher, while Pina chose Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox.

Curry and Butler are excellent players, but the sheer combination of talent and experience of Doncic and James is arguably superior.

Wembanyama and Fox are a promising young duo, but they are not yet on the same level as the two Lakers superstars, especially when it comes to their impact on a game and their experience in high-leverage situations.

Frankly, it’s difficult to find five, or even one, better duo in the league right now than Luka and LeBron.

Michael Pina and Howard Beck’s decision to leave the Luka Doncic-LeBron James duo out of their top five list is a flawed and subjective assessment. The concerns about defense and compatibility have been tremendously overstated, ignoring LeBron’s adaptability and the sheer offensive talent of both players. While basketball is not played on paper, the power of a superstar duo like Luka and LeBron is undeniable. When they truly mesh on the court, they will be a formidable force, and they may just prove that these doubts were entirely misguided.
