HEAT DROP A BOMBSHELL! THE MYSTERY OF THE NFL-Style “Flak Jacket” This Star Is Wearing For His 2026 Return — A Bold Decision To Protect His Rib Injury.

Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat officially returned to full practice on Thursday (February 20, 2026) and has been listed as available for Friday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks — marking his first game action since January 15 after suffering a rib injury (costochondral issue confirmed via MRI).

To protect the injured rib area, Herro opted to wear an NFL-style flak jacket (padded protective vest) underneath his jersey. He explained to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

“They had like a sewing person come in and sew a whole new pad in for me. So I got quite the flak jacket. I look like a football player almost out there. So I’m going to see how it goes, try to feel it out a little bit. Ultimately, just want to feel safe.

Hopefully I just don’t get hit there and we’ll be good. But yeah, I’ll be protected.”

Herro admitted he hasn’t had a new MRI recently, but he feels significantly better:

“We haven’t done another image, but I feel good. I’ve taken some hits there, in the last couple of days, and it feels a thousand times better than it did prior to.

I don’t know what the actual rib looks like, if I were to take a picture of it, an MRI or something. But I feel good.”

Injury History & Season Stats

Herro has been limited to just 11 games this 2025-26 season — the lowest total of his career even if he plays every remaining game. Prior absences include:

  • First 17 games due to left foot/ankle surgery in the offseason
  • 13 games midseason with a toe contusion
  • Last 15 consecutive games due to the rib injury (since January 15)

When healthy, Herro remains one of the league’s top scoring guards:

  • 21.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 2.7 APG
  • Shooting 49.7% FG and 35.8% 3P

This marks his first All-Star selection (2025), and the Heat are hopeful his return will provide a major offensive spark in the final stretch of the regular season.

Current Standing & Importance of Herro

Miami currently holds the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 29-27 record. They are in a tight play-in/playoff race and need Herro — one of their most reliable scorers and floor-spacers when healthy — to maintain momentum and climb the standings.

Why Herro Matters to the Heat

Without Herro, the Heat rely heavily on Bam Adebayo and others for scoring creation. Herro provides elite perimeter scoring, off-ball movement, catch-and-shoot threat, and pick-and-roll playmaking. His return (even with the protective flak jacket) adds significant offensive versatility — especially important as Miami pushes to secure a top-8 seed or better in the East.
