Another man, 38, was also shot but later received treatment at a hospital.
The gunman and his accomplice fled the scene in Eungella, New South Wales.
Police were called at 1.25pm and a search was launched in the town – which is a 20-minute drive from the camp in Dungay, where celebs including Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp would have been at the time.
In another incident on the same road, a 45-year-old man was hit by a car and later treated in hospital – where he was placed under police guard.
He was in custody today along with the suspected accomplice – but local police did not specify what offences they were being held for.
A source said: “The jungle security bosses keep their ears to the ground and are well-aware of what’s going on in the local area.
“If something has happened nearby, they know about it – and they act swiftly to ensure the safety of the entire team at all times.
“Fortunately, no one connected with the show’s production was in any way affected by this incident.”
New South Wales Police Force said: “Officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District have been told two men, aged 41 and 38, were allegedly shot by another man, who ran from the scene with a fourth man.
“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the older man at the property for a gunshot wound; however, he died at the scene.
“He is yet to be formally identified.”
The force said detectives want to speak to both the survivor of the gunshot and the hit-and-run.
It added: “Police are now waiting to speak with those men to establish the circumstances of how both were injured.
“Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
