THE HORFORD EFFECT: Derrick White Reveals the “Biggest Thing” Al Horford Did for the Celtics and Makes a Chilling Warriors Prediction

The Boston Celtics’ dramatic offseason overhaul involved more than just the departure of big names like Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday; it also meant losing key locker room pillars. Among these, Al Horford’s move to the Golden State Warriors might be the most significant loss in terms of team spirit, a point powerfully illustrated by heartfelt comments from his former teammate Derrick White.

In a sincere tribute, White called Horford “the best teammate I’ve ever had.” He recounted a touching story of Horford randomly calling him one summer day two years ago, just to say, “I am so excited for you next year. You’re going to have a great year… I hope you know that I believe in you so much.” This gesture, as White described, was entirely unprompted, yet it highlighted the genuine care Horford extended to his teammates, far beyond the basketball court.

White emphasized that the greatest thing Horford provided was belief: “I think the biggest thing that Al did was that he believed in you.” The presence of a seasoned veteran willing to sacrifice his role and maintain the highest professional standards served as both an example and a unifying catalyst for the entire team.

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla stands in a huddle with Al Horford #42, Jaylen Brown #7, Payton Pritchard #11, Sam Hauser #30 and Derrick White #9 during the second half of the game against the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden on March 05, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Horford’s decision to leave Boston at 39 was a logical one. While the Celtics are in a temporary retooling phase to manage finances and await Jayson Tatum’s return from injury, Horford—with his burning desire to secure a second championship ring—found a more immediate contender in the Golden State Warriors, where he can compete alongside Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green. While not the outright favorites, the Warriors possess enough star power for a deep playoff run.

Horford’s departure is more than just a roster change; it is the passing of a legacy defined by quiet leadership and camaraderie, a legacy that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the Celtics’ players.
