WARNING, Yankees Fans: The Cost to Land Cody Bellinger is More STAGGERING Than Anyone Predicted

As the New York Yankees head into a pivotal offseason, few decisions loom larger than the future of free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger. The former MVP is expected to ignite a fierce bidding war when MLB teams begin negotiations, and his price tag is climbing far beyond initial projections, potentially forcing the Yankees to rethink their strategy.

Initially, projections pegged Bellinger’s value at around $140 million, a hefty but manageable sum for a player of his caliber. However, recent estimates from Spotrac have sent shockwaves through the Yankees’ fanbase, valuing Bellinger at a staggering $182,698,188 over six years—an average of $30,449,698 per season. If signed at this figure, Bellinger would become the highest-paid centerfielder in MLB and the 17th highest-paid player overall, a dramatic increase of nearly $40 million over earlier expectations.

This skyrocketing cost could push the Yankees to reconsider their pursuit. While the team is expected to make a strong push to re-sign Bellinger, who shined in the Bronx during the 2025 season, the financial commitment might be too steep for even the deep-pocketed Yankees. The organization will likely reach out with an offer, but bowing out early in the bidding war is a real possibility if the price continues to climb.

Despite the rising cost, New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that Bellinger remains the Yankees’ top target. “They want Bellinger,” Heyman stated. “If that can work out, they’ll bring him back. He fit in nicely. Left-handed bat.” Bellinger’s versatility—his ability to play both center field and first base—along with his lack of a qualifying offer, makes him an attractive option. His 2025 season was exceptional, with standout defensive play and strong offensive contributions, further boosting his market value.

However, the Yankees have a compelling backup plan in Chicago Cubs star Kyle Tucker, who is also entering free agency. Tucker, like Bellinger, commands a similar market value, but his situation comes with a catch: a qualifying offer that could slightly dampen his appeal due to draft pick compensation. Heyman noted, “Bellinger provides center field and first base. Tucker will have a qualifying offer that could affect him a little bit. Not that much because he’s a big star.” While Tucker is considered the top free agent available, Bellinger’s superior defensive versatility and lack of a qualifying offer could give him the edge for New York.

The Yankees are no strangers to the spotlight during free agency, and this offseason will be no different. With decisions looming in their bullpen, infield, and outfield, the chase for Bellinger will draw the most attention. His ability to anchor center field, contribute at first base, and provide a potent left-handed bat makes him a perfect fit for the Yankees’ roster. Yet, the nearly $183 million price tag could force the team to pivot to alternatives like Tucker or explore other options entirely.

As the bidding war for Bellinger heats up, Yankees fans are left bracing for a rollercoaster offseason. Will New York secure their star outfielder, or will the staggering cost push them toward a different path? One thing is certain: the decision on Bellinger will shape the Yankees’ future and dominate headlines in the months to come.
