Spencer Dinwiddie – still an unsigned free agent – openly pitched himself to the Houston Rockets during an appearance on the Ball Don’t Stop podcast this week.

Dinwiddie said:
“I would love to go to the Rockets. One of my best NBA friends, Dorian Finney-Smith, is on the Rockets… They have all the makings of having a championship-type team.”
Why Dinwiddie Fits Houston
He’s close friends with Dorian Finney-Smith (teammates on both the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets).More importantly: Dinwiddie played alongside Kevin Durant in Brooklyn (2019-21) and briefly again in 2023.The Rockets are without starting PG Fred VanVleet (season-ending ACL). Amen Thompson has been the de facto point guard, with Alperen Şengün taking on extra playmaking duties – Dinwiddie could bring veteran experience and versatility.
Reality Check: Dinwiddie Is a Longshot Last season with the Dallas Mavericks, Dinwiddie averaged 11.0 points and 4.4 assists – solid but not explosive. He’s known more as a streaky scorer than a true playmaker. The Rockets are building around Durant (36.9 MPG, 25.9 PPG), Şengün, Thompson, Green, and their young core – Dinwiddie would likely be a depth piece rather than a priority target.
Still, it doesn’t hurt for Dinwiddie to shoot his shot as he tries to return to the NBA and continue his unusual personal tradition of reuniting with Durant (previously in Brooklyn and Phoenix).
