BOMBSHELL IN MONTREAL: Kent Hughes’ bold move sparked stunning breakout for Canadiens rookie Jakub Dobes

The Montreal Canadiens’ front office, led by general manager Kent Hughes, made a quiet but decisive personnel change that has completely transformed the trajectory of young goaltender Jakub Dobes.

Montreal Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes (75) celebrates the win against the Washington Capitals with teammate goalie Sam Montembeault (35) at the Bell Centre.

The promotion of Marco Marciano to goaltending coach has delivered immediate and dramatic results for the rookie netminder. Since Marciano stepped into the role in late January, Dobes’ game has reached another level, turning him into one of the NHL’s most impressive young performers.

Under the previous regime, Dobes frequently struggled with his positioning. His movements were often too wide and uncontrolled, causing him to drift dangerously far from his crease. Former goaltending coach Éric Raymond had been unable to correct these issues. That all changed with Marciano’s arrival.

Journalist Stu Cowan highlighted how much more composed and controlled Dobes now looks in net. Marciano quickly identified the problem and implemented a clear, specific adjustment: defining an exact zone where Dobes must stop his slides to avoid overcommitting and drifting out of position. The results have been spectacular.

According to journalist Nicolas Cloutier, this technical tweak has propelled Dobes into elite NHL company. Since January 28 — the date of Marciano’s promotion — only five goaltenders in the entire league have posted a better goals-saved performance than the Canadiens rookie.

What makes Dobes’ rise even more remarkable is that he is still technically a rookie. In a short span, he has already surpassed legendary names in Canadiens franchise history. He has more rookie wins than both Patrick Roy and Carey Price, two of the greatest goaltenders to ever wear the CH.

This breakout is no coincidence. Management’s decision to reunite Dobes with Marciano — the same duo that thrived together with the Laval Rocket — has paid major dividends. While the coaching change was reportedly aimed at revitalizing Samuel Montembeault, it has instead launched Dobes into the conversation as Montreal’s starting goaltender of the future.

The next challenge for the young Czech netminder is to climb even higher on the Canadiens’ all-time rookie goaltending list and catch icons like Georges Hainsworth and Steve Penney.

What a meteoric rise it has been. Kent Hughes’ bold move may have just handed the Canadiens their next star goaltender.
